The Influence of Light and Weather on My Paintings

The Influence of Light and Weather on My Paintings

As an artist living on the coast of Cornwall, the ever-changing weather and light play a central role in shaping my work. The natural world here is constantly in motion, from the soft light of early morning to the dramatic storms that sweep in from the Atlantic, and this dynamic environment is a continuous source of inspiration.

One of the most striking elements of Cornwall's landscape is the light. The region’s unique geography means the sun moves across the sky in ways that dramatically shift the mood of the surroundings. In the early mornings, the soft, golden light creates a calm, serene atmosphere, which often inspires my lighter, more tranquil pieces. I enjoy capturing the way the light hits the water, creating reflections and subtle shifts in color.

As the day progresses, the light becomes sharper and more intense. During the midday hours, the contrast between shadows and highlights becomes pronounced, and I often find myself drawn to painting the rugged cliffs and wild beaches under this stark, midday sun. The brilliance of the light on the Cornish coast can be blindingly beautiful, and I aim to convey that intensity through the bold brushstrokes and vibrant colors of my paintings.

However, it’s not just the sunshine that influences my work; the weather here can shift in a matter of hours, bringing dramatic changes to the landscape. Storms, in particular, are powerful moments to witness, as the sky darkens, waves crash, and the air becomes thick with the energy of the storm. These moments inspire a more emotive and dynamic approach to my paintings. The wild winds, the crashing waves, and the clouds swirling above all create a sense of movement that I try to capture on canvas. The contrast between the serene and the stormy is something I find fascinating—both in the landscape and in the emotional impact of the art.

It’s not just the storms I find inspiring, though—the subtle shifts in weather can also bring a new perspective. The fog that rolls in along the coast creates an eerie, mysterious atmosphere. In these moments, the world seems to soften, and the boundaries between land, sea, and sky blur into one. The muted tones of fog and mist allow me to explore more delicate, atmospheric pieces, often focusing on form and texture over detail.

Ultimately, the light and weather here provide an endless source of inspiration. Every day offers something new—a different angle of light, a shift in the sky, a change in the winds—that keeps my work fresh and exciting. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to live and work in a place that offers such variety and beauty, and I strive to bring that sense of wonder and change into my paintings, hoping to evoke the same feelings in those who experience them.
